Rev., Dr. Timo Karvonen
Rev., Dr. Timo Karvonen is the senior pastor of Fern Creek UMC, having served this congregation since 2012. Originally from Helsinki Finland, Rev. Timo came to the U.S. in 1999 as a scholar of the Board of Global Ministries of the UMC (New York) to extend his doctoral studies at Asbury Theological Seminary. He graduated from Asbury in 2003 with a doctorate and M.A. degree in Christian Education. Also holding business and seminary degrees from Finland, he went back to research studies through the International Divinity School and in May 2010, completed his Doctorate in Divinity.
Pastoral ministry has always been his passion and first calling. He loves serving the Lord, and also loves serving people. To Rev. Timo, ministry is a privilege; not just his work. And he loves the people of Kentucky, choosing to stay here instead of returning to Europe after his studies.
Rev. Timo and his wife, Sirpa, have three children. Camilla, a high school teacher, lives in Owensboro. Nora, also a teacher, is married to Tim and they have a beautiful little girl – just ask Rev. Timo about his granddaughter! Their son, Mikael, is a high school graduate and lives at home.
When he has the time, you’ll find Rev. Timo riding his motorcycle, or, having been a former hockey player himself back in Finland, watching ice hockey whenever possible. Walking is a favorite form of exercise, and he enjoys being outdoors. Ask him who his favorite actor is and you’ll hear about the good old westerns and the legend of those movies, John Wayne. British movies come in a close second!
Rev. Timo wants you to know that Fern Creek is a special kind of church, with lots of care and love for this community. He’ll tell you we are not perfect, but we do love the Lord! Please join us and help make Christ known to everyone, no matter who they are or where they are from. We invite you to help us “Be The Church”.
